explosive devices. found on or near the scene of the bombings today. law enforcement officials have not confirmed that there were other unexploded bombs for lack of a less specific but more politic term. as of tonight the official confirmation is that there were two devices. only two. those were the two that caused the massive explosions. to the extent that there were other devices today, isolated and treated in some way by law enforcement, those may have been devices that were investigated as suspect packages, as potential bombs and done away with by law enforcement in the sometimes explosive way they do that. there are no suspects as of this evening. no arrests have been made. the investigation is now being headed by the fbi in conjunction with other federal and state and local agencies. i want to bring in now a young man today who is an eyewitness to what happened today. jared walker. he was eating with co-workers from ibm at a restaurant a football field's length of way when he heard the first explosion. thanks for being here. you're 100 yards away. what was it like watching? >>
collective law enforcement team has pursued thousands of leads and tips. as i said two days ago, we're working methodically and with a sense of urgency to identify those responsible for the bombings. within the last day or so, through the careful process, we initially developed a single person of interest. not knowing that the individual was acting alone or in concert with others, we obviously worked with extreme purpose to make that determination. the entire force of the federal government, the fbi in boston, around the world, as well as our partners in the boston police, atf, massachusetts state police, and more than 30 agencies of the boston joint terrorism task force ensured that all responsible for the bombings will be brought to justice. more importantly, it was done to ensure the future safety of the city of boston, the commonwealth of massachusetts, and the country. indeed, through that process, the fbi developed a second suspect. today we are enlisting the public's help to identify the two suspects. after a very detailed analysis, a photo, video and other evidence, we are r
exception under the miranda allowing law enforcement to interview him, making sure there are no other bombs, threats, perpetrators still out there giving the law enforcement flexibility to do the that prior to miranda and i think the court will interpret it broadly and give them the time they need to make sure that the public is safe. after that, he will have to be mirandized, doesn't mean the end of cooperation, but no basis yet to conclude they should be treated at enemy combatants. we're talking about an american citizen on american soil. there's no evidence that i've seen yet that they were a part of an al qaeda cell or directed by a foreign government. we're very far afield from a situation which is sort of the paradigm for enemy combatant status. that is, someone captured on the balg battlefield in a theater of war. resist these charges as an enemy combatant. the court has proven capable of supporting a terrorist constitution and i'm confident the justice department with all the evidence we've seen and a lot more we haven't can build a very strong case. >> congressman, at this point w
from waco, according to a police sergeant, who is reporting this information. apparently the law enforcement official who has been missing after the blast has been accounted for. it has been accounted for, he's in a hospital in critical condition right now. the texas national guard is monitoring the air in and around the town of west, texas. it's not clear how many people have been exposed to this kind of ammonia. the gas coming from this fertilizer plant. it's a gas used to make fertilizer at the plant. buti but its fumes can be very dangerous. suffocating, can cause blistering, can cause chemical burns if it stays in the body. this is a serious situation, elizabeth cohen, medical correspondent. senior medical correspondent, talk a little bit about the impact of the gas from this kind of fertilizer plant. >> right. we know a lot about this gas, it's often involved in explosions. when crystal meth labs explode, that's ammonia. what it is, if you get a huge big whiff of it and are you exposed to it a lot over time, even quickly it can kill you. however, if you don't get too much o
law enforcement all appealing to the public, asking for any amateur video and photographic evidence that can aid in what now has become a massive investigation. >> we are in the process of securing and processing the most complex crime scene that we've dealt with in the history of our department. we are doing that under the direction of the fbi and in partnership with the atf. jenna: not insignificant that he says that the most complex investigation in their department's history. despite a variety of different reports that you've all heard over the last 24, nearly 24 hours, the commissioner is making it very clear that right now no one is in custody in connection with these attacks. >> we still do not know who did this or why, and people shouldn't skwrupl top conclusions before -- jump to conclusions before we have all the facts you about. make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this. and we will find out who did this. we'll find out why they did this. any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice. jon: president obama on the air just
're sharing it with other law enforcement agencies, just trying to see if anybody knows this person and there is to doubt a strategy to that. but they don't want to get the information or any pictures out of the public yesterday to perhaps clue this person in on where they're at in the investigation. so we can't independently verify any of those other pictures that are floating out there and i can tell you that the authorities have not officially released any pictures. >> has there been a sense of frustration from the authorities, scott, because of all of the, you know, head fakes and misinformation that has gotten out, some of the early stuff that's been out, also because of potential media that's made it easy to make these pictures go around very quickly. >> well, i'm sure there's a great deal of frustration. we've with he got the fbi's statement that came midafternoon yesterday after the false reports of an arrest. that was pretty strongly worded that said that basically admonished the media to vet your information better. that said that the reports of an arrest were erroneous an
